Orioles unravel in new threads as Grayson Rodriguez allows 3 home runs in 12-2 loss to Rangers

Entering Friday, 92% of the Orioles’ games this year had been decided by four runs or fewer. Night in and night out, they have played close games, and night in and night out, they have often won.In their series opener at Camden Yards against the Texas Rangers on Friday night, though, the Orioles played by far their most lopsided game of the year. Grayson Rodriguez allowed three home runs — including a fourth-inning grand slam to Rangers star shortstop Corey Seager — and eight earned runs as Baltimore fell, 12-2.Before Friday, the largest margin in an Orioles game this season was a 6-0 loss to the Kansas City Royals earlier this month. With an announced crowd of 20,293 witnessing the Orioles debut their all-black — albeit with a colorful interior — City Connect uniforms, Adley Rutschman gave the Orioles a 1-0 lead with a first-inning home run.But in the next frame, Rodriguez allowed a two-run homer to Leody Taveras, and in a nightmarish fourth inning, the...

By LISA MASCARO, SEUNG MIN KIM, KEVIN FREKING and FATIMA HUSSEIN (Associated Press)WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden said a deal to resolve the government’s debt ceiling crisis seemed “very close” late Friday, even as the deadline for a potentially catastrophic default was pushed back to June 5 and seemed likely to drag negotiations between the White House and Republicans into another frustrating week. The later “X-date,” laid out in a letter from Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, set the risk of a devastating default four days beyond an earlier estimate. It came as Americans and the world uneasily watched the negotiating brinkmanship that could throw the U.S. economy into chaos and sap world confidence in the nation’s leadership.Yet Biden was upbeat as he left for the Memorial Day weekend at Camp David, declaring, “It’s very close, and I’m optimistic.”With Republicans at the Capitol talking with Biden’s team ...

HINGHAM — It was pretty clear before the fact just who would finish in the top three of the girls’ 200-meter dash in Friday’s first day of competition in the Div. 4 Championships at Notre Dame.Pembroke’s Sarah Claflin, Grace Hanafin of Burlington and Tewksbury’s Jayani Santos all cruised to easy wins in their respective heats and each girl dipped under 26 seconds, seemingly setting up a close battle in the final. It was Claflin, though, who saw to it wouldn’t be as close as advertised. Hanafin was clocked in a quick 25.10 and Santos garnered the bronze medal in 25.33.“I got out good and was strong off the turn,” said the junior. “We all had good trials and I had a good sense about it.
