DENVER — Aaron Judge took a step in the right direction on Friday, testing his right big toe with some on-field batting practice at Coors Field.Judge, who has been out since tearing a ligament in his toe on June 3, said he didn’t feel limited “at all” while swinging. The outfielder, who is using orthotic insoles, also did some running, though not at full speed.“I really wouldn’t say pain,” Judge said when asked if he felt any while hitting. “I’d say we’re getting better every single day. Like it’s not healed. So obviously, it is what it is, but we’re progressing every single day.”While Judge seemed happy with his BP session, he did not want to talk about possible target dates for his return to a Yankees lineup that has missed him.“I’m just trying to get closer every single day,” he said. “When I’m out there, you guys will see me out there.”Aaron Boone, meanwhile, had som...Mets Notebook: David Peterson to bullpen with Jose Quintana activated

Five months after a major health scare, Jose Quintana is finally ready to join the Mets rotation. The left-hander completed his rehab Thursday at Citi Field with a simulated game and was activated Friday. The Mets designated reliever T.J. McFarland for assignment to make room on the roster.Quintana has been eager to get started since he underwent bone graft surgery to remove a lesion on his left rib in March, but now that the sim game is over and the second half of the season underway, the veteran starter is extra excited to get back on the mound.“The process is done,” Quintana said Friday at Citi Field. “I’ve been working a lot to be in this position and to be back next series, contributing to the team and to be able to win games.”The 34-year-old threw 84 pitches to hitters from High-A Brooklyn. It was more than he had thrown in any previous rehab starts and the extended outing helped him get used to the pitch clock. Coming into the All-Star break as the hottest team in baseball, the Red Sox could have easily lost their momentum after four days away from the ballpark.Fortunately, it was obvious by the third inning Friday that the Red Sox still had their mojo.On a night where the ball was flying out of Wrigley Field, the Red Sox picked up right where they left off and crushed a season-high six home runs to beat the Chicago Cubs 8-3 in the second-half opener. In doing so they’ve now won six straight, along with nine of their last 10 dating back to June 30.Rafael Devers led the way with two solo shots in his first two at bats, and he was joined by Adam Duvall, Triston Casas, Justin Turner and Yu Chang, all of whom left the yard as well.“We’re going to hit, we know that, it’s just a matter of staying within the approach,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “Obviously today it played very small here, we hit the ball in the air and we got rewarded.”Turner also ha...Man opened fire on police officers in Fargo, North Dakota, before he was shot, witnesses say

When infielder Anthony Prato was called up to the Saints on June 10 from Double-A Wichita, he filled the spot created when Edouard Julien joined the Twins.“Eddie has been killing it up there,” Prato said. The same holds true for Prato in St. Paul. The 25-year-old native of Brooklyn, N.Y., was 2 for 4, including a two-run home run, Friday night in the Saints’ 8-5 loss to the Durham Bulls at CHS Field. Prato is hitting .314 since his call-up from Wichita. The date of their promotions is not all that links Prato and Julien.
