SAN JOSE – William Eklund was determined to make the San Jose Sharks roster out of training camp this year, even though he was only about six months removed from having surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. After an impressive training camp in which he improved with each passing day, Eklund reached his goal, as the Swedish-born forward on Monday was named a part of the Sharks’ 23-man opening night roster.“It means a lot. I worked (hard) for this,” Eklund said. “Now my job is to be here all year. So my focus is on that.”It just so happens that the Sharks’ season-opening game on Thursday against the Vegas Golden Knights also falls on Eklund’s 21st birthday. He said his parents will likely be in attendance for the game at SAP Center.“It’s my birthday and it’s opening night,” said Eklund, who was drafted seventh overall by the Sharks in 2021. “So, it’s a good day.”NHL teams had to submit their salary-cap-compliant rosters of 23 players or less by 2 p.m. (PDT) ...

I’d bought them from a nearby store that had already started wild profiteering and was charging three times the normal price. We were two miles north of the site of the World Trade Center; the neighborhood smelled of acrid smoke, which turned out to be preferable to the stench of burnt, rotting bodies that would develop later that week. Now, according to a plethora of voices, with the vicious recent attacks by Hamas, Israel has experienced its own 9/11. “This is our 9/11,” says the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations. “This is our 9/11,” says the Israeli military’s spokesperson. “This is the equivalent for Israel of probably what hap...

Cristobal, coaches take full blame for Miami’s decision to not run out clock

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Miami coach Mario Cristobal reiterated Monday that he takes full responsibility for the Hurricanes not taking a knee in the final seconds of their loss to Georgia Tech, even as offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson revealed that he actually called the play in which the ball was fumbled away.“I made the wrong call,” Cristobal said.Miami led Georgia Tech 20-17 and could have been in victory formation — taking a knee to essentially end the game — when a running play was called. Don Chaney fumbled the ball with 26 seconds left, and Georgia Tech took over on its own 26-yard line.It took the Yellow Jackets four plays — an incompletion, a 30-yard gain, a spike to stop the clock and a 44-yard pass with 2 seconds left — to find the end zone and win 23-20, handing Miami (4-1, 0-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) its first loss of the year.“What we did at the end was the wrong decision,” Dawson said. “I called it. It is what it is. I wished we would have done something diffe...
