Kurtenbach: Studs and duds from the 49ers’ 42-10 embarrassment of the Cowboys

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:12:21 GMT

SANTA CLARA — It was a nearly perfect game for the 49ers.It was a performance so dominant, it allowed those poor souls on the East Coast — subject to an 8:20 p.m. kickoff time — to go to sleep at a reasonable hour.It was perhaps the single best game the 49ers have played under head coach Kyle Shanahan. The 49ers’ 42-10 win over the Cowboys was so dominant that it feels ridiculous to declare studs and duds — the 49ers were the former, the Cowboys, the latter — but we endeavor, nevertheless:STUDSFred Warner LBWarner’s forced fumble of Cowboys running back Tony Pollard at the end of the first quarter was the kind of impact play that few NFL defenders can produce. It should have been a turning point in the contest, but Christian McCaffrey’s fumble at the 2-yard line gave the ball right back to Dallas.Warner, of course, ended that subsequent Dallas drive with a sack of Dak Prescott in the open field. He had eight tackles, that sack, and a fourth-quarter interception.I tal...

SANTA CLARA – Sunday night’s stage offered up the 49ers’ greatest regular-season win in Levi’s Stadium’s 10-year history, a 42-10 thrashing of the forever-rival Dallas Cowboys.Prisoner of the moment? Perhaps. But this certainly was the 49ers’ most dominant victory in their 5-0 start to this season, and while it came in the NFL’s showcase timeslot, it also attracted franchise legends such as Steve Young, Jerry Rice, Frank Gore, and Bryant Young.“Let’s go!” tight end George Kittle shouted to the capacity crowd via the stadium’s giant video screens, after scoring one of his career-high three touchdown catches from Brock Purdy’s on-the-mark passes.Purdy finished with a career-high four touchdown passes, Christian McCaffrey chimed in with his 14th consecutive game with a touchdown (1-yard run), and, in representing the 49ers’ menacing defense, Fred Warner produced a sack, a forced fumble, and an interception.“That was our best c...

Director takes ‘Totally Killer’ slasher horror in new directions

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:12:21 GMT

When director Nahnatchka Khan opened the “Totally Killer” script Blumhouse Productions had sent, there was a surprise.“Usually when Jason Blum sent a script to me, there’s a synopsis page,” Khan, 50, began in a Zoom interview.  “There was nothing like that so I just started reading. Because it was Blumhouse I knew some slasher horror element was coming but I had no idea what the story was and immediately I was hooked.“Because it’s a real challenge — and that what I was looking for.”Challenge doesn’t quite suggest the balancing act necessary for this comedic time traveling slasher movie murder mystery to fly.It begins in the present day, with rebellious Jamie (Kiernan Shipka) and her over-protective mother (Julie Bowen) who remains traumatized 35 years later by the Sweet 16 Killer who stabbed each of her three 16-year-old friends 16 times. When on Halloween, the masked killer strikes again, what else can Jamie do but jump into her best friend’s secret time machine an...

Editorial: Now Biden takes aim at for-profit colleges

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:12:21 GMT

Progressives have a deep mistrust of the private economy and profit, which explains the Biden administration’s decision to relaunch an assault on certain college programs that critics argue don’t deliver for students. The Department of Education announced that it would publish a new regulation on Oct. 10 intended to punish colleges whose graduates have either large debt loads in relation to their salaries or earn less than the average high school graduate in their state of residence. The Barack Obama White House pushed a similar effort in 2014, which the Trump administration later reversed. The new rule is supposed to hold schools accountable for their performance. There’s nothing wrong with providing taxpayers, students and potential enrollees with pertinent data on graduation rates, costs, job placements, etc. This can help students make decisions and schools better meet the demands of the marketplace.Yet the bulk of the regulations apply only to for-profit schools, not traditional f...

Coyle, Harris & Racoosin: Building strong communities starts in Boston

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 14:12:21 GMT

If you visit the Boston metro area, you’ll notice benches strategically placed around town with a simple message: “Sit here if you don’t mind chatting with someone new.” These “Happy to Chat” benches are part of a community-based initiative to encourage residents to get to know their neighbors and socially connect. It is a common occurrence to see individuals pause from their morning stroll to sit on one of the benches and strike up a conversation with another resident. The “Happy to Chat” benches are just one of a myriad of actions that local leaders and organizations are taking to proactively address rising levels of social isolation and loneliness in their communities. Coordinated initiatives at the local level like this can derive large rewards. It is no secret that we are facing a crisis of connection in the United States. In May, the U.S. Surgeon General released an advisory shedding light on the profound consequences of social is...
