Guerrero’s 11th homer in Bronx leads Jays over Yanks 6-1

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 12:50:51 GMT

NEW YORK (AP) — Vladimir Guerrero Jr. put Toronto ahead in the first inning with his 11th home run in the Bronx and Brandon Belt drove in four runs to lead the Blue Jays over the New York Yankees 6-1 Friday night.Yusei Kikuchi (3-0) allowed one run and four hits in six innings and has a 1.91 ERA over five starts and one relief appearance at Yankee Stadium. Erik Swanson, Trevor Richards and Yimi García finished a five-hitter.“Just being able to attack the hitters and just keeping that mentality I think has been big for me,” Kikuchi said through a translator.Wearing powder blue uniforms, Toronto went ahead against Domingo Germán (1-2) when George Springer doubled on the game’s first pitch and two batters later Guerrero hit a drive into the visitors bullpen in left-center for his fourth home run this season. Guerrero is batting .296 (37 for 125) in 32 games at Yankee Stadium.“Since you are a little kid, you dream of playing at Yankee Stadium,” the 24-year-old son of Hall of Famer...

Meneses hits 1st homer, Nationals rally past Twins 3-2

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 12:50:51 GMT

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Joey Meneses hit his first homer of the season, Keibert Ruiz singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, and the Washington Nationals rallied past the Minnesota Twins 3-2 on a chilly Friday night.Joey Gallo’s solo homer was one of just five hits for the Twins, who have scored two or fewer runs in seven of their 20 games.Minnesota led 2-0 before Meneses went deep in the seventh, a 409-foot drive to the bullpen in left-center that chased Twins starter Tyler Mahle. In the eighth, Griffin Jax (1-2) got the first two outs, but No. 9 hitter CJ Abrams sliced a ground ball past a diving third baseman José Miranda, who was playing well off the line. After Abrams pulled up at second with a double, Lane Thomas delivered him with a single to left. Thomas took second on a wild throw home, and he scored easily on Ruiz’s hit. That was enough for the Nationals bullpen. Erasmo Ramírez (1-1), Hunter Harvey and Kyle Finnegan each pitched a scoreless inning. Finnegan picked...

Knicks rout Cavaliers 99-79 at MSG to take 2-1 lead

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 12:50:51 GMT

NEW YORK (AP) — Jalen Brunson scored 21 points, RJ Barrett broke out of a slump with 19 and the New York Knicks held the Cleveland Cavaliers to the lowest point total in the NBA this season, rolling to a 2-1 lead in the first-round playoff series with a 99-79 victory Friday night. The Knicks emphatically bounced back from a loss in Game 2 and moved halfway to their first series victory since 2013. They led by 27 points in the fourth quarter, when a sold-out crowd of 19,812 at Madison Square Garden was so loud there was little chance of hearing much of what the public address announcer was saying — especially as seldom-used veteran Derrick Rose was checking into the game to a huge ovation.Josh Hart added 13 points for the fifth-seeded Knicks, who host Game 4 on Sunday. They became the first team to allow fewer than 80 points during the regular season or postseason.Donovan Mitchell scored 22 points for the Cavs, who never gave themselves a chance with their most inept offensive perform...

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Nikola Jokic had his seventh career triple-double in the playoffs with 20 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists for the Denver Nuggets, who fended off the Minnesota Timberwolves 120-108 to take a 3-0 lead in the first-round NBA playoff series Friday night.Michael Porter Jr. had 25 points and nine rebounds and Jamal Murray added 18 points and nine assists as Denver withstood another dashing performance by Minnesota's Anthony Edwards to send a loud crowd of white-shirt-wearing fans home from another frustrating postseason loss.Game 4 is here Sunday night. It was sometimes ugly, sometimes beautiful and overall dominant from the Knicks.New York didn’t win style points Friday night but dominated where it mattered most — on the scoreboard — riding a resurgent RJ Barrett and an energized crowd to a 99-79 victory to take a 2-1 series lead. The Cavs shot just 36.8 percent on the evening, with Knicks center Isaiah Hartenstein agreeing that the visitors were rattled by the raucous Garden fans.“Yeah, I think coming into a crowd like this, not many people are used to it,” Hartenstein said. “Madison Square Garden, the playoffs especially. I’ve been in a couple series now. Nothing was like it.”Garland, the Game 2 hero, looked especially flustered, missing (shield your eyes, children) 17 of his 21 attempts. The Cavs managed the fewest points of any team in any game of the 2022-23 season.Much of Cleveland’s poor production was about the Knicks’ swarming defense. Their active hands and ...
