My friend the English professor says that people who use wrong words should have the humidity to admit it. I could make a similar comment about declarers who face several finesses and try the wrong one first.Against 3NT, West led the queen of clubs, and South won with the king to finesse in diamonds, his long suit. East won and had no club to return, which was just as well: He led the ten of hearts, and West took the king and returned a heart.EIGHT TRICKSSouth had eight tricks: four diamonds, a heart, two clubs and a spade. He ran the diamonds, but when he finessed in spades, West took the king and led his last heart, and East took three hearts. Down two. When South finessed in diamonds first, he risked losing to East, the “dangerous” defender who might lead a killing heart. South must win the first club in dummy and finesse in spades. West wins, but no return can hurt South. He will have time to finesse in diamonds and win at least nine tricks. This week: “avoidance...

Nationals Notebook: Fighting for fourth and foiled by Philly

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 04:20:24 GMT

For one brief shining moment, the Washington Nationals climbed out of fifth place thanks to their 8-7 win Friday night against Philadelphia, only to slide back into the cellar with losses in the next two games.Sunday’s 11-3 drubbing highlighted how far the Nats have to go before they leave the NL East basement behind for good.“You know, I think we have a very competitive team on this side,” Joey Meneses said through an interpreter after the series finale. “Unfortunately, there was one big inning for them that just kind of opened the game and the floodgates but I think that compared to them we’re a very good team as well.”The Phillies pounded five home runs, with their leadoff hitter Kyle Schwarber (remember him?) and their number nine batter Drew Ellis each blasting a pair. The Nats currently rank 29th in the majors with 46 homers, meaning they have to grind offensively, and scored 13 runs on 28 hits over the weekend.“It’s not very easy...

No longer in the days of ‘Baywatch:’ local aquatic centers struggle to staff new lifeguards

Staffing struggles have hit many industries across the U.S. — including community pools, which are scrambling to hire lifeguards for the summer season. The American Lifeguard Association, which is based in Vienna, Virginia, says about half of the nation’s 309,000 public pools will be forced to close their doors or reduce hours if more lifeguards aren’t hired and trained this summer. But the pool season has already begun.Cynthia Brown, the aquatic coordinator of the Greenbelt Aquatic Center, told WTOP that, in addition to young adults, she is also reaching out to people who used to be lifeguards and those that have applied in the past and may still be interested.“It’s been very tough. It’s just not a job that people are looking for anymore,” she said. “When we were younger, children looked up to being the lifeguard. We had TV shows; we had ‘Baywatch.’ We had all of these TV shows that made us look like the real hero. And it’s not l...

Estrogen-only pills used as HRT raised blood pressure in study. Experts weigh in

(CNN) — People who use estrogen-only pills during menopause were more likely to be diagnosed with high blood pressure than those using patches or creams, a new study found. However, doctors who treat menopause say estrogen-only pills are rarely prescribed for high-risk patients, and the overall benefits of hormone replacement therapy far outweigh the risks for many patients.Hormone replacement therapy, or HRT, can be given as estrogen only, progesterone only or estrogen plus progesterone, to combat symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes, chills, night sweats, sleep problems, mood changes and vaginal dryness and pain during sex. Most of the time, the dual formation uses progestin, a synthetic version of progesterone.People taking estrogen-only pills during menopause were 14% more likely to be diagnosed with high blood pressure than those using estrogen-only patches, the study found. When compared to people using estrogen-only vaginal creams or suppositories, those taking the...
